Ingrid's Surprise Party

For the last week and half I've been lying to my wife. After all, you can't plan a surprise for your spouse without fibbing a bit. It was even more of a surprise because her birthday is in December. We call these "half birthdays", because she and I both have birthdays within days of Christmas and everyone is usually pooped out from holiday parties to celebrate our birthdays. So, we decided to make our own tradition of celebrating our half birthdays, in the summer, when people like to party. Ingrid did this for me first (last year) and I was totally surprised. So I returned the favor this year for her. We believe that anything is possible, and if you don't like something in your life, change it. For goodness sake, life is short, celebrate often with those you love and shower them with delightful surprises:)

Before the surprise at the restaurant with 12 friends.

iPhone

Where in the world do you think Becker will be today?

Where To Buy an iPhone (Update)

"Don't go to an Apple store," Steve Jobs famously advised Arianna Huffington last month. "It will be a madhouse there. People will be lined up around the block, sleeping on the sidewalk to get one. Go to an AT&T/Cingular store. Most people don't know that they will be selling them too." (link)

Good advice? That depends.

There are 164 Apple Stores in the U.S. and 1,800 AT&T Wireless outlets, so you probably have a better chance of finding an AT&T store with a short line.

On the other hand, Apple probably controls the distribution of the devices, so there may be a larger supply in stock at its stores when they go on sale Friday at 6 p.m.

And you can buy more iPhones at Apple. AT&T (T) announced yesterday that it will limit sales to one per customer. Apple (AAPL) in a press release this morning announced that customers at its stores will be allowed up to two -- one for yourself and another to, say, sell for a profit on eBay.

The lines should move quickly at either company's outlets; the authorization procedure that usually seems to take forever can be done at home, through your iTunes account. But having dealt with staffers at both outlets, I'd put my money on Apple's staff to get you in and out more smoothly.

Alternatively, you can buy your iPhone online. The link on Apple's online store, which appeared a few days but was grayed out, has now gone live. It's not clear whether buyers on the West Coast have to wait until 6 p.m. Pacific time, or can place their orders when it's 6 p.m. in New York. We'll find out soon enough.

Wherever you buy your phone, Apple is the place to go to find out how to use it. According to today's press release:

Beginning Saturday morning, iPhone customers can learn how to get the most out of the iPhone with free, in-depth workshops offered throughout the day at all Apple retail stores. Every Apple retail store will offer support for iPhone at the Genius Bar and personal training through Apple's new One to One program. (link)

Each company offers a handy store finder. To find the Apple store nearest you, go here. To find an AT&T store that carries iPhones, go here. Here again, however, Apple retail does AT&T one better. It has set up an iPhone availability webpage that tells you, store by store, if their supply has run out.

UPDATE: AppleInsider reports that Apple will be hosting a nationwide sleepover tonight as a skeleton staff of Apple employees man the Apple's stores overnight, presumably for security reasons. And Cult of Mac reports that Steve Jobs will host a rare town meeting for employees this morning at 11:00 a.m PT.

No Show

Joe Photo was a no show at PPOC. I had every intention of going until lunch time when my neighbors offered us their RV and camping spot today in Carlsbad for the night. Sweet. I'm going on an adventure with the family like in the movie RV? (Remember, I take fun with me where ever I go).

I hope everything went great with the PPOC celebration and I wish them another fabulous 40 years of success.

PPOC turns 40

PPOC is celebrating their 40th anniversary today and they are looking for new members. Perhaps you may want to check them out. I'm going to celebrate with them and check out what's new. I was a member for a year about 10 years ago. This was a time long before photojournalism was the rage, and the Board still embraced the traditional portraits in high esteem. I didn't fit in there very well at that time. In fact, as a direct result of our experience there, Becker and I started our own networking group. Interestingly, our commitment to open sharing with like-minded photographers has shaped many of the studios in the OC and touched others worldwide. It seems absolutely crazy to me as I look back. I just did what I loved to do, and I shared the little I knew with those who wanted to learn. How fun is that. (I take fun with me where ever I go:) So today, I plan to take fun to a picnic and meet some new people and greet old friends. Many photographers in OC have shaped who I am today, and I'm grateful to them. Let's all inspire each other along the journey as we pursue our common passion.

Erica & Michael's Enchanted Wedding

Erica and Michael had such a fun wedding last weekend. They were so in love and laughed a lot! I always tell couples that I think the secret to a long marriage is laughter. My wife and l laugh together frequently and often at ourselves. It's great to be silly and child-like. Focus on keeping it lite and live happily ever after. Thank you Erica and Michael for inviting me to be a part of your big day! Your wedding was an awesome reminder of what's important in a relationship. These are some of my favs. Enjoy!

Cash Flow Quadrant

I read this book a few weeks ago and it's definitely worth your time. Work smarter, not harder. Enjoy!

Rich Dad's Cashflow Quadrant will reveal why some people work less, earn more, pay less in taxes, and feel more financially secure than others. It is simply a matter of knowing which quadrant to work from and when.

Have you ever wondered...

What is the difference between an employee and a business owner?
Why do some investors make money with little risk while most other investors just break even?
Why do most employees go from job to job while others quit their jobs and go on to build business empires?
Why, in the Industrial Age, did most parents want their children to become medical doctors, accountants, or attorneys... and why, in the Information Age, are these professions under financial attack?
Have you noticed that many of the brightest graduates from our universities want to work for college dropouts... dropouts such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, and Ted Turner? Dropouts who today are the mega-rich of society.

This book will answer some of these questions and also assist in guiding you to find your own path to financial freedom in a world of ever-increasing financial change.

It is a book written for...

people who are ready to move beyond job security and begin to find their own world of financial freedom
people who are ready to make deep professional and financial changes in their lives
people who are ready to move from the Industrial Age to the Information Age
It's time to get out of the rat race. Rich Dad's Cashflow Quadrant shows you how.

Creativity

Yesterday morning as I enjoyed an incredibly uplifting walk, I gave thanks for one of my areas of gifted abilities, Creativity. As an artist, I enjoy the ever changing approach of documenting my clients images in fresh ways. How are you doing in this area of your business? Here's some food for thought.

Sizzle! Sizzle!
by: Neil Eskelin

Everyone likes excitement. When people bubble with personal energy, others enjoy being around them. Business firms like to hire a staff that brings zest to the establishment. Some national restaurant chains, for example, train their staff to form an impromptu ensemble and sing "Happy Birthday: or "Happy Anniversary" to their customers on special occasions. It produces more than noise. People keep coming back.

One restaurant, knowing how people respond to excitement, devised a special plan. When a customer ordered a steak dinner, the chef placed the meal on a hot steel plate. Then, just before the waiter left the kitchen, he would drop an ice cube on the platter.

The waiter was instructed, "Walk slowly to the table. We want everyone to hear the sound of that hot platter." It wasn't the steak that was sizzling, but the ice. The plan worked like instant advertising. If customers were in the process of ordering, they'd hear that sound and choose a steak. The sizzle produced the sale.

Today, think creatively. Ask yourself, "How can I add some excitement to what I plan to deliver?"

Sara & Deepak Engagement

Wow, the past 48 hours have been full of fun! Thursday morning I flew out to 107 degree weather in Vegas to photograph Sara and Deepak. The photo session went awesome and I had a blast getting to know them. I had a late dinner with Deepak's family and then went out to a new club with my long time friend Paul until the wee hours. Friday morning I got up early and had breakfast with my Aunt Normie and Uncle George who were visiting Vegas from Texas. I flew home, got a short nap, and then took Mikayla to Gwen Stefani! My awesome friend Kelly Meyer hooked me up with the tickets and the show was fabulous. Now it's 2 am (again so soon) and I'm posting some of my favorite images of this beautiful couple. I'm going to bed now... Enjoy!

World's most expensive cities

Moscow wins again, with London as runner up. New York drops five places to No. 15, while San Francisco plunges 20 places to No. 54, according to Mercer's 2007 survey.
By Jeanne Sahadi, CNNMoney.com senior writer
June 19 2007: 3:19 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- If your boss wants to transfer you to Moscow this year, he'd better offer you a fair sum to do so - or even a downright handsome one depending on where you live now. That's because Moscow has just been designated the world's most expensive city for the second year in a row by Mercer Human Resource Consulting.

Using the cost of living in New York as a base, Mercer determined Moscow is 34.4 percent more expensive after taking into account the cost of housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.

Read More here.

After just being there and talking to some of the people who who struggle to live there, I was surprised at how expensive items were in Moscow. We stopped at a mall to have lunch and I did a little window shopping. Rock and Republic jeans were $400 (US) on sale for $200. They had one pair left. Who is buying $400 jeans in Russia, I wondered. The fact is, the young people are very fashionable. There were tons of cool guys shoes available. What a difference these high priced luxury items were from the stark reality of life at the orphanages. I'm beginning to realize that the world is the same where ever you go. There are those with money and power in this life and those without. God freely blesses both. My prayer is that those with material blessings bless the less fortunate. If you're moved to do so, please consider Children's HopeChest. Thank you:)

Russia Kids and Translators

The most special part of my trip to Russia was the Kids and the Translators. Both impacted me deeply. The kids beamed with joy and translators revealed deep devotion. This video introduces each child I photographed at the orphanages as well as the translators and our team. Even just a few weeks ago, I didn't even know these kids existed, and now they have become a part of my life, and I've become connected to them. There are so many more wonderful people I have yet to meet.

Enjoy the show.

Russia Days 8 & 9

The last orphanage we visited was Volzhsky. I met some amazing kids there. One of my favorite kids there was Yulia. She is a 15 year old artist who wants to be a jewelry designer and have her own store. I asked her to paint a tattoo on me while the other kids were having their faces painted. She chose to paint Bart Simpson and she asked me not to look until she done. It was a magical moment in my life. Simply awesome. I also played soccer and volleyball and ping pong there. Whew, the team really did some running around, and those kids are fast. Here are some of my favorite memories we projected for the kids to see. Enjoy!

Father's Day Recap

Wow, I had the best Father's Day. I was really just hoping to go to church this morning and hang out this afternoon. I got to go to church, see friends and have lunch at Ruby's and Mikayla gave me a card that made me cry. Ingrid surprised me and scheduled massages for us at the house with Louis, the best massage therapist in the world. Then I had my favorite wine with Greek food. Sometimes I just pinch myself because I can't believe that I could be so blessed. My wife is awesome:)

Father's Day

“By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong.” Charles Wadsworth

“The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”
Theodore Hesburgh

“If the new American father feels bewildered and even defeated, let him take comfort from the fact that whatever he does in any fathering situation has a fifty percent chance of being right.”
Bill Cosby

“My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.”
Clarence B. Kelland

“I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father's protection.”
Sigmund Freud

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”
Mark Twain

`One night a father overheard his son pray: Dear God, Make me the kind of many my Daddy is. Later that night, the Father prayed, Dear God, Make me the kind of man my son wants me to be.’

I had the rare opportunity to spend time on Friday and Saturday with my dad. Though he lives close, we both seem to get so busy that we don't get to hang out to often. I photographed his National campaign for President on Friday - "Remember, a vote for Joe is a vote for progress. Let's Roll!"
Dad
Actually, my father is the director of HR for Catholic Charities Los Angeles, and was MC for their Staff Appreciation Day.

Last night we did get to hang out together for dinner and drinks. ( I just noticed that he always has something in his right hand. Hmmm.)

Russia Days 5,6 and 7

The next 2 and a half days we spent at my favorite of the 3 orphanages - Sudai. I had some deeply moving experiences with the kids there and really felt connected. While playing this slideshow for the kids, I cried. Tears of pure joy to be able to share the talent I've been blessed with. I felt the most proud I've ever felt showing my images. That should speak volumes to all of you who know me. Enjoy.

I'll resume with Russia images on Monday. I want to post a few special thoughts for Father's Day tomorrow

Russia Days 3 and 4

The first of the 3 orphanages we visited was Soligolich. It's a remote location in the countryside and the kids here range from about 5 to 15 years old. The younger kids came right out to greet us as the pulled up. I made a new friend immediately. His name is Arsen, and he and I hung out together while I was there. It's really tough because these kids don't get visitors so they really cherished the time and energy we gave them. Honestly, two days goes by sooooo fast. Leaving there was the most difficult. I got emotional as the bus pulled away to our next location. Please pray for these kids and their caregivers. If you'd like to be involved with projects like these, please let me know and together we can impact the world with our talents.

A year ago I was deeply moved by the movie Born Into Brothels and the movement of Kids with Cameras. With the help of FujiFilm I was able to get 111 One-Use cameras into the hands of the orphans. My lab Fotoworks has generously offered to process all of the film! We'll be sending the images back to the kids in the next few weeks. Most of the children had an absolute blast shooting. Keep checking back as I'll be post some of the best images from the kids in the coming weeks.

Enjoy the slideshow! (click play below:)

FreeVideoCoding.com

The slideshow is 9 minutes long. I thought that this would be the best way to see all the kids. Also, this is the actual slideshow we projected for the kids at the orphanage. They loved it! It's amazing how photographs break through language barriers and communicate love. Have a blessed day!

Russia Day One

What a fantastic journey! Russia was incredible. The trip was a life changing experience. As you may know, I went there as part of a Missions team from Capo Beach Calvary. 17 of us (plus translators) travelled for 10 days (plus 2 flying days) to 3 orphanages in Western Russia aided by Children's Hopechest.
Over the next 10 days I'll be sharing with you images from my journey on the road less travelled and the beautiful people I met along the way.

Day One was a sight seeing day in Moscow. I was so stoked to be standing in Red Square! Wow. Moscow is a city bustling with 10 million people. The traffic is even worse than LA (if you can believe that).

We started at Christ The Savior Cathedral
