Rest

Unknown - “Sometimes the most urgent and vital thing you can do is take a complete rest.”

I'll be getting back tonight from a 3 day wedding in Las Vegas. You can bet that tomorrow I'll be taking it very easy.

Have a blessed day! I can't wait to show you images:)

Planes, Helicopters and Beautiful People 2

I really like this image too. It's tough to coordinate 4 models in lifestyle moments under extremely tight time considerations at the airport. I'm stoked on this image and I'm having a blast shooting fashion. I'm still in Vegas and having a great time. Enjoy.

SWEET LIGHT!

Check out this Eye Candy! I used a Profoto 5 foot Reflector for this shot and took my style to a whole new level. This is straight out of the camera! No Photoshop! Amazing. I'm in love with portable lighting.... Enjoy. Tune in for more images through the rest of the week.

David August Fashion Shoot

It's fall again and I shot all day yesterday on David's Fall fashion shoot for SPACE magazine. Fashion is fun! I have much more to do for editing, but I thought I would at least tease you with one of my favorite images. We shot this on top of a Heliport in Newport Beach. Stay tuned for more.

Lisa and Steven's Wedding

After some rain on Saturday in the morning it turned out to be a beautiful day. You know that rain is good luck on your wedding day. Most brides prefer sunshine. Lisa got both. The Bride and Groom got dressed at the St Regis in Monarch Beach and had their ceremony in Laguna Beach at St. Catherine's before returning to The Monarch Beach Club for their reception overlooking the Pacific. Hooray for the beach:) The wedding was designed by my fabulous friend, Susan MacDonald of Sumac Productions. Enjoy.

Book of the week is under construction

I know, I know, it's Monday and that means "book recommendation day". The problem that I'm having is that I'm getting behind on my reading. Last week, I recommended The Tao of Pooh, and I still have yet to finish it. Bummer. I also realized that I want to go deeper in a few of the books I've finished in the past month and really apply them to my life. So, I'll be taking at least two weeks off from recommendations. A sort of mini vacation.... Perhaps that gives you the opportunity to finish a book that you have on your night stand. I'd be happy to hear any books that you'd like me read and post about in the next few weeks too:) Cheers.

Check back tomorrow for some smokin' hot wedding photos.

Where are you?

Earl Nightingale - “People are where they are because that's exactly where they really want to be ... whether they'll admit that or not”

As I've said over and over again, "if you don't like what's going on in your life....change it!!" May this day be the start of living how you really want too live.

way after the wedding photographer has gone home

Found this video on YouTube and thought, "where is the wedding photographer"? Then I read the description - dancing past 2 am at the wedding reception one year ago this weekend. That explains it. Savor the moment. Enjoy.

Another Before and After

Erik's comments on my last post got me thinking about peoples preferences and the decision "to tweak or not to tweak". These "before and after" images are a bit more subtle. I'd love to know which one you like better and why. Thanks for the comments and have a great weekend!

Before and After

I am happy to be an artist. Sometimes, while working on images, I achieve a result that was better than I even imagined it to be in my head. This was the case with this image of the little girl lying on the bed. The moment was spontaneous, but in that instant I saw her face lit up with expression and very little else. So that is what I sought to show in the final image. Have a blast in Photoshop and be don't worry - be happy.

Looking for Inspiration?

Have you ever noticed that there is a lot of time wasting garbage online? It's harder and harder to sort through the junk and view the cutting edge of photography on the web. My buddy "The Actual Joey Himself" turned me on to JPG magazine a few months ago and I'm stoked that he did. This magazine seriously rocks. Prepare to be inspired! Check it out if you haven't seen it yet. Enjoy.

The Tao of Pooh

This is an unexpected recommendation from my long list of great books. I read about this book years ago and never got to reading it. I actually didn't like reading back then. I'm open to this book now. I have just started reading it, so I hope you won't be disappointed. If it sucks, I'll post and let you know. If anyone has comments, I'd love to know.
Enjoy!

From Library Journal Author/narrator Hoff calls Winnie the Pooh a "Western Taoist" and uses the unassuming bear to introduce Eastern philosophical principles. Pooh epitomizes the "uncarved block," as he is well in tune with his natural inner self. Pooh enjoys simple pleasures and the daily progress of life. Hoff contrasts this unpretentiousness to other characters created by Winnie - the - Pooh author A.A. Milne, including Owl, whom he describes as a "mind that tries too hard," and Eeyore, the eternal pessimist. In a clear and crisp voice, Hoff explains the central tenets of Taoism and further illustrates them with familiar excerpts from The House at Pooh Corner stories (1923), Chinese proverbs, maxims, and tales from Lao Tzu and others. The result is at once thought-provoking and charming. This is a small literary event that will leave all who experience it a little more serene. For most collections.

Hundreds strip naked on glacier in global warming protest

This is actually a very cool idea. I wish I was involved in the shooting. It's so hard to draw attention to a cause these days. This video has nudity on a glacier to make a statement. That's awesome. The only element that could have drawn more attention is if they could have enlisted the backsides of Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore out there too. Nevertheless, global warming is happening friends. If a large group of you want to undress up in Big Bear this winter, I volunteer to shoot it:)

Giada Bella Todd

10 days ago, my friends Brook and Alisha Todd, had their first baby. They are fabulously famous photographers in the San Francisco area. Alisha's mom Becky sent me the link for the first baby photos today. Here's a few of my favs, plus my "Don't Bruise My Fruit" portrait of Brook. I don't know why I think it's appropriate here. Maybe because that's the stance he'll be taking in 13 years when boys start coming to the house for his daughter. Just wait, bro:) Enjoy.

Sadly, Brook lost his right hand fingers in a freak C section mishap. Don't stare, he's a bit self conscience now. On the up side, he was at the hospital, and now seems to becoming friendly with the pain meds:)

Edward Weston

Very often people looking at my pictures say, 'You must have had to wait a long time to get that cloud just right (or that shadow, or the light).' As a matter of fact, I almost never wait, that is, unless I can see that the thing will be right in a few minutes. But if I must wait an hour for the shadow to move, or the light to change, or the cow to graze in the other direction, then I put up my camera and go on, knowing that I am likely to find three subjects just as good in the same hour. -Edward Weston

Here is New York -a democracy of photographs

The power of photography has it's strongest moments when photographers come together to share their gifts and talents helping others. This day will be remembered as a day that Americans united for a cause. Please explore the response of so many in Here is New York.

In response to the World Trade Center tragedy, and to the unprecedented flood of images that have resulted from it, a unique exhibition and sale of photographs was displayed in a store front in SOHO. HERE IS NEW YORK is not a conventional gallery show. It is something new, a show tailored to the nature of the event, and to the response it has elicited. The exhibition is subtitled "A Democracy of Photographs" because anyone and everyone who has taken pictures relating to the tragedy was invited to submit their images to the gallery, where they were digitally scanned, printed and displayed on the walls alongside the work of top photojournalists and other professional photographers. All of the prints which HERE IS NEW YORK displays were sold to the public for $25, regardless of their provenance. The net proceeds from the sale of these prints went to the Children's Aid Society WTC Relief Fund, for the benefit of the thousands of children who are among the greatest victims of this catastrophe.

The causes and effects of the events of 9/11/2001 are by no means clear, and will not be for a very long time. What is clear, though, is this: in order to restore our sense of equilibrium as a nation, as a city, and particularly as a community, we need to develop a new way of looking at and thinking about history, as well as a way of making sense of all of the images which continue to haunt us.

Now That we no longer have a gallery, it is over the web that we keep this project alive. Our intention is to display the widest possible variety of pictures from the widest possible variety of sources, believing as we do that the World Trade Center disaster and its aftermath has ushered in a new period in our history, one which demands that we look at and think about images in a new and unconventional way.

HERE IS NEW YORK is a non for profit 501(c)(3) foundation organized for purposes that are exclusively charitable and educational.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

51fsazava3l_ss500_

Wow, this is a revolutionary book. A lot of people may say "No Way!", it's not possble to only work 4 hours a week and travel the world, living your dreams at the same time. This book replies loud and clear "Why the heck not?!". Tim's ideas will blow your mind. I'm beginning to implement a few of them right away. It is said that "knowledge is power". The information in this book is powerful for transforming your mind, however, you must take action for the transformation to effect your life. Who's up for the challenge? Enjoy!

Book Description
What do you do? Tim Ferriss has trouble answering the question. Depending on when you ask this
controversial Princeton University guest lecturer, he might answer:

“I race motorcycles in Europe.”
“I ski in the Andes.”
“I scuba dive in Panama.”
“I dance tango in Buenos Aires.”

He has spent more than five years learning the secrets of the New Rich, a fast-growing subculture who has abandoned the “deferred-life plan” and instead mastered the new currencies—time and mobility—to create luxury lifestyles in the here and now.

Whether you are an overworked employee or an entrepreneur trapped in your own business, this book is the compass for a new and revolutionary world. Join Tim Ferriss as he teaches you:

• How to outsource your life to overseas virtual assistants for $5 per hour and do whatever you want
• How blue-chip escape artists travel the world without quitting their jobs
• How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist
• How to trade a long-haul career for short work bursts and freuent "mini-retirements"
• What the crucial difference is between absolute and relative income
• How to train your boss to value performance over presence, or kill your job (or company) if it’s beyond repair
• What automated cash-flow “muses” are and how to create one in 2 to 4 weeks
• How to cultivate selective ignorance—and create time—with a low-information diet
• What the management secrets of Remote Control CEOs are
• How to get free housing worldwide and airfare at 50–80% off
• How to fill the void and create a meaningful life after removing work and the office

You can have it all—really.

Selfishness - The official 1st poll on Cup of Joe Photo

Polling is fun when a lot of people participate. I'd like at least 100 people to vote. Please take a moment to respond and have a wonderful day!!

Here's the idea to consider.

Oscar Wilde - “Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live; it is asking others to live as one wishes to live. And unselfishness is letting other people's lives alone, not interfering with them. Selfishness always aims at uniformity of type. Unselfishness recognizes infinite variety of type as a delightful thing, accepts it, acquiesces in it, enjoys it.”

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DIDN'T VOTE ABOVE.....

a few more Sunset Images... and some thoughts:)

Delays happen. I wanted to post these images last night. But, after hanging out late with family and friends, drinking wine, smoking cigars, and discussing our purpose in life, I sat down in front of my computer and found out that Typepad was unavailable for posting as they were doing routine service updates. I was tired and went to bed. This morning brought more inspired conversations and it seems as though the last 18 hours have been an exciting environment for deeper thinking. Diversions happen. It's not the end of the world because this post is late. To the contrary, I have information to share that would not have been posted last night. Changes happen. I have the opportunity to learn from every event, twist and turn that appears before me. I am embracing change and delays and diversions are part of my process. Perhaps today will present you with an invitation for change masked in delays or diversions. How will you respond?

Please enjoy a few more of my favorite images of Alysha and Evan at Sunset.

RIMROCK WORKSHOPS with John Mireles & Joe Photo

For the past 3 weeks, John and I have been working diligently to create a life changing experience for photographers in the form of a 3 day workshop. What we have come up with is Rimrock Workshops. This workshop is for those of you who really want to expand your vision and focus on an exciting change for your life and for your business. You know who you are. Throughout history, sojourners have gone "into the desert" for clarity of purpose and direction. Does this sound like something you are looking for? Three full days of sunshine, shooting, models, Photoshop, food, drinks and lively conversation, all in one of the coolest places you've ever experienced. John and I would be thrilled to have you journey with us.

I've been dying to unveil this video:)

What
"Expand Your Vision: A Creative Journey into the Future of Wedding and Portrait Photography" A three day technical and business workshop by Joe Photo and John Mireles

When
November 6 to 8, 2007

Pricing
The three day on-location workshop is $1,800. It includes the following:

- Portfolio review by Joe Photo or John Mireles prior to workshop for review of work and goals
- Three days of intensive instruction by John and Joe
- Evening barbeque and get together in Pioneertown
- Photo shoots with beautiful agency level models
- Complete use of the Rimrock Ranch for photography and instruction
- To be announced guest photographers
- Lunch for all three days
- Plenty of before, during and after interaction with Joe, John and other attendees

Who Should Attend
This workshop is recommended for portrait and wedding photographers who wish to expand their creative abilities and grow their businesses. All participants should be fluent in their knowledge of their camera and lenses. Participation in the workshop will be limited to 25 people in order to ensure the highest quality of instruction.

Where
We chose Rimrock Ranch for our workshop because, well, it’s beautiful, different, inspirational and you can’t help but take great shots out here. Rimrock Ranch is nestled amidst the high desert foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains. It’s surrounded by Joshua Trees, desert plains and martian landscape boulders.

Rimrock Ranch is located about ten miles north of Yucca Valley in the Mojave desert of California. Palm Springs is about 40 minutes away and Los Angeles is about two hours. The closest airports are located in Palm Springs or Ontario (about 1 1/2 hour away and serviced by Southwest) airports.

Just a few miles away is Pioneertown, an old west town created for 50’s cowboy movies and tv shows. Not only is it home to the colorful Pappy and Harriet’s saloon, it’s filled with weathered barns, a surreal burned-out train coach, and many vintage storefronts. All of the images on this web site were shot at locations that will be available to us during the workshop.

Accommodations
We have made special arrangements for lodging at the nearby Pioneertown Motel, former overnight home to movie stars like Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and Gene Autry. Each room is $63.50 per night. Five dorm style rooms are available to share with one other participant (two per room max) at a rate of $38 per night. Reservations may be made directly through the motel. Their web site is www.pioneertownmotel.com

Here's a few more images from the bridal sunset series I shot a few nights ago. I rented a 1200ws Hensel "Porty" with a single head. All of these images were shot with the bare bulb head in bright sun at the full 1200ws. Which one is your favorite?

I'll show you a few more tomorrow too:)

Imagination

Here's a few to wrap your brain around. I give you permission to daydream well:)

Ralph Marston - “There is no limit to what you can imagine. And with commitment, with effort, what you can imagine you can become. Put your mind to work for you. Believe that you can do it. The world will tell you that you can't. Yet, in your belief you'll find the strength, you'll find the ability, to do it anyway.”

Albert Einstein - “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions.”

Killer Sunset

Yeah for portable lighting! I've been playing with a 1200ws Hensel Porty this week. How fun it is:) Portable lighting gives a whole new twist to my location lighting. I was like a kid in a candy store last night photographing my clients who were just married at The Montage Resort and Spa. You'll be able to see many more of their wedding images next week.
Have a blessed weekend.
